Contaminants are invisible bacteria or organisms that are potentially harmful to their surroundings. Contamination can be known by a variety of different terms depending on the industry, such as; particles, pathogens, allergens, micro- organisms, airborne molecular contaminants (AMC's) and bacteria.
Yet, contamination from foot, wheel and airborne microbial particles are something we often dismiss as “dust” or “dirt”. The dangers it poses can be devastating. .

A single microbe in a batch of aseptic drugs could cause the entire batch to be quarantined or scrapped, leading to supply shortages, financial consequences, product recalls, FDA warning letters or even company shutdown.
When we can’t see particles, there is the tendency to ignore taking preventative measures, but somewhere which might appear clean can potentially be heavily contaminated, as most harmful contaminants are invisible to the naked eye. Some contaminants are capable of living, developing or germinating under favourable conditions (viable), whereas some contaminants are not (non-viable).

Microbial contamination has serious consequences for life sciences. One microbe in a batch of aseptic drugs can threaten the whole batch, leading to it being quarantined or scrapped.

Hospital acquired infections
Contamination in operating theatres, ITUs and recovery areas can provide a significant increase in risk of hospital acquired infections such as MRSA.
Takeda were looking to reduce the risk of cross contamination via the footwear of employees entering the production areas through the cloakroom/changing areas and back in the other direction. After installation, it was quoted that "Dycem flooring systems have considerably limited the spread of contamination by employees moving from the production area to the cloakrooms/changing areas". The installation of Dycem has resulted in a sizeable reduction in cross contamination of dust transported by employees.
Like many facilities, Actavis wanted to reduce the risk of cross contamination in their critical environments.
